The Best Android Shortcuts You’re Probably Not Using

The beauty of technology isn’t just doing more stuff–it’s doing stuff quickly. Whether you want to call a specific contact with one tap, keep your phone unlocked when you’re at home or work, launch the camera in a flash to quickly capture the perfect moment, or search for an app while in a rush, here are some of the best shortcuts built into Android that you’re probably not using.

Launch the Camera Instantly with a Double-Tap of the Power Button

We’ve all been in a situation where the perfect shot comes along, but by the time you get your phone out of your pocket, wake it up, unlock it, and launch the camera, that moment is gone. It’s a bummer, and all you end up with is a terrible picture that was taken too late and just reminds you of the moment you missed.

The good news is that it doesn’t have to be this way. If you’re running a modern Android phone with Marshmallow (Android 6.0), then you can launch the camera instantly by tapping the power button twice while the phone is asleep (it’s the home button on Samsung Galaxy phones). Seriously—go ahead and try it.
(On a few select phones, this shortcut may be different. For example on some Motorola phones, you can instead “twist” the phone in your hand twice to launch the camera.)
It should only take a split second to have the camera ready to go with this super useful little shortcut.

Quickly Search for Any App

If you have a lot of apps installed, sometimes it’s easier to just search for what you’re looking for than it is to scroll through a stupid-long list of stuff. Fortunately, Google baked a way into the Google Now Launcher—which is the stock launcher on Nexus devices, but also available for download from Google Play for all others—to quickly get access to the app drawer’s search tool.

From the home screen, just long-press the app drawer icon. That’s it! The drawer will immediately open with the “Search Apps…” bar open and the keyboard ready to go. It easily shaves a bit of time off of opening the drawer, then tapping the Search box.

Use Quick Responses to Let Callers Know Why You Can’t Answer

This feature has actually been around since Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0), though I’m not sure many people realize it still exists—or new users know about it at all. Basically, it offers a quick way of letting someone know why you can’t answer the phone by sending them a quick text—all you have to do is swipe up on the incoming call screen and choose what text you want to send. There are a few pre-set selections, like “Can’t talk right now. What’s up?” and “I’ll call you right back,” but the best part is that you can actually customize these on most Android phones.

In stock Marshmallow, just jump into the dialer and tap the three-button overflow menu in the top right corner. Select “Settings,” then “Quick responses.” There you go—edit away.
On stock Lollipop (5.0+) phones, the process is basically the same, but in the dialer’s Settings menu, tap “General,” then “Quick responses” at the very bottom.

Each manufacturer may have these hidden in different spots—some of which make sense, and others that do not. For example, on Samsung’s newest software builds, you can find Quick Responses in the More > Settings > Call blocking > Call-reject messages. Yeah, it’s pretty deep.
Keep in mind that it may or may not be labeled as “Quick responses,” but the option will almost certainly be found in in the dialer app.

Unlock Your Phone Easily (and Still Keep It Secure) with Smart Lock

This one may be a little more obvious than some of the others, but if you’re not using it, then you’re doing yourself a disservice. In a nutshell, Smart Lock allows keeps your device unlocked when the right circumstances are met. For example, when you’re at home, it can use location services to make sure you never have to input your PIN, pattern, or password to unlock the phone. Or when you’re connected to a specific Bluetooth device—like a car stereo system —it will stay unlocked.

That’s useful, because if the user-specified criteria isn’t met, the configured lock screen security method will take over. In my situation, for example, my phone stays unlocked as long as it’s connected to my smartwatch. That way, as long as it’s nearby, I don’t have to worry about the hassle of using the security method. But if I leave it somewhere or it gets stolen, it’ll be locked up tight so prying eyes can’t access my personal data. It’s a win-win, really.
To enable Smart Lock on most devices, jump into the Settings > Security menu and set a secured Screen Lock. Then, enable Smart Lock back in the Security menu—there are several options here, like “Trusted Devices,” which is where you’ll set Bluetooth devices to keep the phone unlocked, “Trusted places,” where you can specify your home or work locations, “Trusted Face,” where you can use the phone’s front camera and your own head to unlock, “Trusted voice,” where you can use your voice to unlock, and “On-body detection,” where the device will stay unlocked while it’s on you. The first two options make the most sense to me, but of course you should enable whichever option(s) make the most sense for your situation.

Call or Text With One Tap Using Contact Widgets

We all have people that we contact more often than others, and there’s no easier way to keep those quick calls or texts to one tap than with the Contact Direct widgets. These are essentially 1×1 icons on your home screen that immediately call or text a specific contact with one tap.

To drop one of these icons on your home screen, just jump into your device’s widgets menu by long-pressing the home screen and tapping the “Widgets” icon. Scroll until you find the “Contacts” section, then choose whichever one you want to use: Direct dial 1×1 or Direct message 1×1. Long-press it then, drop it on the home screen. From there, you’ll select the contact you want to associate the widget with, and that’s it. You’re not just one tap away from your favorite people.

If you use Nova Launcher, you can also create swipe actions that do something similar without taking up extra space on your screen.

Use Your Voice to Do Everything Faster

This one might be the most useful, but most overlooked, feature on this list. Everyone knows about Google Voice Actions, but are you really using them as much as you could be? Probably not. There’s an insane amount of things Google Now is capable of, and all you need to do is say “OK Google”. It may feel weird talking to your phone at first, but when you realize how blazingly fast it is for certain tasks, you’ll never go back.

Before you do that, however, you’ll need to enable “OK Google detection” from any screen. To do that, jump into the Google Now app by either swiping up on the home button or long-pressing it (depending on your version of Android), heading into the menu, and choosing “Settings.” From there, select “Voice,” then “’OK Google’ detection.” You can toggle the “From any screen” setting here, and it will prompt you to set up a voice model if you haven’t already. Now you can call on Google Now from any screen.

But that’s just where this one starts. Once Google Now is listening to what you’re saying, you can ask it a huge variety of questions, such as (but not limited to):
  • When does X business close?
  • How tall is person?
  • How many quarts are in a gallon?
  • What is five percent of 99?
  • What’s the weather going to be like this weekend?
  • When is holiday?
  • When is the next sports team game?
  • What song is this? (with music playing in the background)
  • What time is it in other place?
And so much more. But again, that’s not all. You can also set reminders, send texts, or create appointments:
  • Text friend “how about lunch tomorrow?”
  • Remind me to do thing tomorrow at 11 AM.
  • Set a timer for X minutes.
  • Navigate to place of interest.
  • Call person or business.
  • Listen to Artist on Google Play Music.
  • Create a calendar event: name, date, and time.
Seriously—the more you use it, the more you’ll learn to do with it. Then you can set a reminder to kick yourself for not doing this sooner.

BEST FIX: How to Fix “Temporary Profile” issues in Windows 10

What are Window's User profiles?
Your user profile is a collection of settings that make the computer look and work the way you want it to. It contains your settings for
desktop backgrounds, screen savers, pointer preferences, sound settings, and other features. User profiles ensure that your personal
preferences are used whenever you log on to Windows. A user profile is different from a user account, which you use to log on to Windows.
Each user account has at least one user profile associated with it.





Fix for error:  User profile service failed the logon, User profile cannot be loaded







  
Correcting or Fixing a Corrupt User Profile in Windows 7 - Copy and Restore Method
  
1 - Restart your computer. This releases any locks Windows may have on the profile folders.
2 - Log on with an account with administrative priviledges.
3 - Move   C:\Users\%username% to a safe location     (%username% being the account that has the corrupt profile)
4 - Delete   C:\Users\TEMP,   if it exists.
5 - Delete the profile registry key from:    “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList”
6 - You can confirm you’re choosing the right registry key by checking the value “ProfileImagePath” to make sure you pick the right profile.
7 - Reboot the computer and log in as the “broken” user to make Windows recreate the profile automatically.
8 - Restore any documents, favorites, desktop, files, etc. from the original profile folder you moved in the third step.
 


 
Correcting or Fixing a Corrupt User Profile in Windows 7  - Not deleting the Profile method
1. Login using another local administrator account. (Make one if there isnt another).
2. Open regedit and navigate to HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList Find the key on the left that corresponds to the corrupted profile.
         Note the value of the string on the right called GUID. Look for one with a .bak which should contain the true profile details
         (verify with the user path for the profile). - If there is no .bak version - this method will not work.
3. To be safe - recommend right clicking on the existing ProfileGuid and the .BAK version and exporting them to a safe place on your hard drive
4. Simply delete the ProfileGuid registry folder that is using c:\users\temp that is associated with the .bak version
5. Rename the .bak version by removing .bak from the registry folder name
6. Log off the secondary account you are in and log back in as the primary account that was corrupted
7. If it works - your good to go! If not - resort to the delete the profiles method - but be sure to make backups of the profile folders.
 
 


 
Correcting or Fixing a Corrupt User Profile in Windows 7 - Error =   “You are logged into a Temporary Profile.”  Deleting the Profile method
This problem seems to happen more frequently when it is a member of a domain.

1 - Restart your PC to release the locks on your profiles.
2 - Log on with another administrative account.
3 - Delete the following folder: (you could also follow the steps below by simply renaming the bad profile to .bak)     C:\Users\%username%
4 - Delete the following folder:     C:\Users\TEMP
5 - Browse to
         HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
         Find the registry key that has the “ProfileImagePath” entry that matches the username of the account.
         Make a note of the GUID entry a few lines above, you will need this later. Now delete the entire registry key from the “ProfileList” folder.


6 - Now in the registry, browse one folder above to
         HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileGuid
         Delete the registry key (that matches the GUID you made note of in Step 5) from the folder.
7 - Reboot




Correcting or Fixing a Corrupt User Profile in Windows Vista

1 - Restart your PC to release the locks on your profile.
2 - Log on with another administrative account
3 - Delete C:\Users\%username%
4 - Delete C:\Users\TEMP
5 - Delete the registry key matching your SID from
         HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

         Check the value “ProfileImagePath” to make sure you pick your own profile.
6 - Restart once again and then you’re done!



Windows 8 keeps loading with Temporary profile

Enable Built Admin account.
a) Press Windows and x key together on your desktop screen.
b) Click on Command Prompt (admin).
c) Type: net user administrator ⁄active: yes
Note: Please follow the same steps and type net user administrator ⁄active: no to disable admin account after the troubleshooting is done
After enabling Built-in admin, please try with the steps below:
 
Perform SFC Scan
Please follow the steps to perform SFC Scan:
a. Press “Windows Key + Q” to open Charms Bar.
b. Type “cmd” without quotes in the search box.
c. On the left pane, right click on the “cmd” option and select “Run as Administrator”.
d. Type ‘sfc ⁄scannow’ without quotes and hit enter.
Note: It may ask for windows installation DVD to fix and to enable SFC to make more than minor repairs. Some files saved on your
computer might get deleted when fixing corrupted files.
 
Perform Microsoft Safety Scanner to scan your computer for infections.
To download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner, follow these steps:
a) Go to the Microsoft Safety Scanner site at: Microsoft Safety Scanner (http:⁄⁄www.microsoft.com⁄security⁄scanner⁄en-us⁄default.aspx)
b) Click Download Now.
c) If prompted, click Run. Follow the on-screen instructions to download and install the Microsoft Safety Scanner. When prompted, add a shortcut to the Microsoft Safety Scanner to your desktop.
d) From your desktop, double click the Microsoft Safety Scanner icon. When the Microsoft Safety Scanner program launches, click Scan Type, then click Full Scan, then click Next.
e) After the scan is complete, remove all detected malware entries
Note: Any data files that are infected may only be cleaned by deleting the file entirely, which means there is a potential for data loss.

From Built in administrator account create a new user account and transfer the profile data.
Please follow the steps below to do that:
a) Press Windows and x together and select Windows Explorer.
b) Click on View tab and Click on Options at the top right corner.
c) Click the View tab, and then click Show hidden files, folders, and drives.
d) Uncheck the box which states Hide protected operating system files.
e) Click Yes to confirm, and then click OK.
f) Locate the C:\Users\Old_Username folder, where C is the drive that Windows is installed on, and Old Username is the name of the profile you want to copy files from.
g) Select all of the files and folders in this folder, except the following files:
•Ntuser.dat
•Ntuser.dat.log
•Ntuser.ini
h) Right click and Select Copy.
i) Locate the C:\Users\New_Username folder, where C is the drive that Windows is installed on, and New Username is the name of the new user profile you created.
j) Right click inside the folder and select Paste.
k) Restart your PC and check if you are able to log in to default profile.
 
ADDED NOTES⁄COMMENTS
Actually, I JUST had this issue myself. I had to clone my partition to a new hard drive and this first messed up my c <-> d drive lettering. After a few hours to fix this,
I started to have this same issue with the TEMP profile. I searched around within the Registry and found an entry here;
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
If you look within one of the sub-keys within that (on mine it was called 5-1-5-21-557812858-3650550099-3850275229-1001), you will find a key called 'ProfileImagePath'.
Ensure that key is pointing to the right directory. Once I pointed it to the right hdd, my TEMP profile issue was fixed.
  
If you delete the \user\bad_user_profile, then delete the entire sub-key containing the reference to the bad profile, next attempt to log in will treat the user and
brand new and rebuild everything correctly.





Windows 7 Profile Corruption

You find that clicking upon a users profile, you get the "The user profile service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded".

1. Restart your computer and hit F8 enter on Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
2. Once a command prompt pops up, type: net user administrator password ⁄active:yes (you can specify whatever password you want for the administrator account.) - In this case the password = password
3. If you get a message saying "The command completed successfully", then restart your computer by typing: shutdown -r
4. Boot up again pressing F8, but this time choose just Safe Mode.
5. You will be able to login as Administrator with the password you set in Step 3
6. Type regedit
7. Once the registry editor opens up, look for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
8. In the left pane, find the one that starts with S-1-5..... and ends with .BAK; if you don't find one, skip to step 13
9. Right click it and click Rename, then change the .BAK to .BK
10. Right click the one with the same numbering but without the .BAK and add .BAK add the end
11. Right click the one that you renamed to .BK and clickRename, delete the .BK
12. Eventually, you have switched the .BAK from the end of the second entry to the first. That should probably fix your problem.
13. If you didn't find a .BAK then try this: Open Windows Explorer to C:\Users\Default\AppData\Local\Application Data
14. If you find another Application Data below the one you're on, then delete it. That should probably also fix your problem.
15. If you can't login in Safe Mode, then reboot and hit F8 until you see the menu again, then hit enter highlightingRepair Your Computer
16. Wait until all Windows Files finish loading, then hit Next when it asks keyboard language.
17. Try logging in here also, choose your user from the dropdown menu, and type the password, then jump to step 21
18. If that still doesn't work, then if you have your Windows Installation CD still, put it in and restart your computer.
19. Hit F12 until you see a menu of boot options, choose Boot from CD
20. Choose keyboard language then hit next. Find Repair Your Computer
21. Choose Open Command Prompt and type: net user administrator password ⁄active:yes (here again you can specify a password)
22. Close the command prompt and click Restart and jump to step 5

To disable the administrator account, type this in an elevated command prompt: net user administrator ⁄active:no




I do it a bit differently
I fix this bug regularly. It also happened to the very PC I do support from! The posted fix works. I do something a bit different I use
FabsAB4tech to copy over the profile first, using a different account then I delete it and the registry key referencing my C:\users\*username*
let the domain authentication rebuild the desktop⁄profile. And of course use Fab to retrieve the profile once I am logged in as the troubled
user. Make sure your in a real profile and not in a temp profile. If you get a temp profile you did not delete the right key.
The key in question is the same the one listed in a previous comment.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
You will see a bunch of SIDS, browse each SID until you find the SID that is referencing your trouble profile and just DELETE the entire SID
key on the left side! (Export it first if you want to be safe) navigate through all of them because you may find more than one reference to the profile.

There was one time I forgot to delete the C:\Users\Profile and it just went right back to the normal users desktop. No issues, no temp profile.
I never tried to do it again. Perhaps this process could be much easier that we think?

Understanding VPN IPSec Tunnel Mode and IPSec Transport Mode - What's the Difference?

IPSec’s protocol objective is to provide security services for IP packets such as encrypting sensitive data, authentication, protection against replay and data confidentiality.
As outlined in our IPSec protocol article, Encapsulating Security Payload (ESP) and Authentication Header (AH) are the two IPSec security protocols used to provide these security services.  Analysing  the ESP and AH protocols is out of this article’s scope, however you can turn to our IPSec article where you’ll find an in-depth analysis and packet diagrams to help make the concept clear.

Understanding IPSec Modes –Tunnel Mode & Transport Mode

IPSec can be configured to operate in two different modes, Tunnel and Transport mode. Use of each mode depends on the requirements and implementation of IPSec. 

IPSec Tunnel Mode

IPSec tunnel mode is the default mode. With tunnel mode, the entire original IP packet is protected by IPSec. This means IPSec wraps the original packet, encrypts it, adds a new IP header and sends it to the other side of the VPN tunnel (IPSec peer).
Tunnel mode is most commonly used between gateways (Cisco routers or ASA firewalls), or at an end-station to a gateway, the gateway acting as a proxy for the hosts behind it.
Tunnel mode is used to encrypt traffic between secure IPSec Gateways, for example two Cisco routers connected over the Internet via IPSec VPN. Configuration and setup of this topology is extensively covered in our Site-to-Site IPSec VPN article. In this example, each router acts as an IPSec Gateway for their LAN, providing secure connectivity to the remote network:

Another example of tunnel mode is an IPSec tunnel between a Cisco VPN Client and an IPSec Gateway (e.g ASA5510 or PIX Firewall). The client connects to the IPSec Gateway. Traffic from the client is encrypted, encapsulated inside a new IP packet and sent to the other end. Once decrypted by the firewall appliance, the client’s original IP packet is sent to the local network.
In tunnel mode, an IPSec header (AH or ESP header) is inserted between the IP header and the upper layer protocol. Between AH and ESP,  ESP is most commonly used in IPSec VPN Tunnel configuration.
The packet diagram below illustrates IPSec Tunnel mode with ESP header:

 ESP is identified in the New IP header with an IP protocol ID of 50.

The packet diagram below illustrates IPSec Tunnel mode with AH header:

The AH can be applied alone or together with the ESP, when IPSec is in tunnel mode. AH’s job is to protect the entire packet. The AH does not protect all of the fields in the New IP Header because some change in transit, and the sender cannot predict how they might change. The AH protects everything that does not change in transit. AH is identified in the New IP header with an IP protocol ID of 51.

 

IPSec Transport Mode

IPSec Transport mode is used for end-to-end communications, for example, for communication between a client and a server or between a workstation and a gateway (if the gateway is being treated as a host).  A good example would be an encrypted Telnet or Remote Desktop session from a workstation to a server.

Transport mode provides the protection of our data, also known as IP Payload, and consists of TCP/UDP header + Data, through an AH or ESP header. The payload is encapsulated by the IPSec headers and trailers. The original IP headers remain intact, except that the IP protocol field is changed to ESP (50) or AH (51), and the original protocol value is saved in the IPsec trailer to be restored when the packet is decrypted.
IPSec transport mode is usually used when another tunneling protocol (like GRE) is used to first encapsulate the IP data packet, then IPSec is used to protect the GRE tunnel packets. IPSec protects the GRE tunnel traffic in transport mode.

The packet diagram below illustrates IPSec Transport mode with ESP header:

Notice that the original IP Header is moved to the front. Placing the sender’s IP header at the front (with minor changes to the protocol ID), proves that transport mode does not provide protection or encryption to the original IP header and ESP is identified in the New IP header with an IP protocol ID of 50.
The packet diagram below illustrates IPSec Transport mode with AH header:

The AH can be applied alone or together with the ESP when IPSec is in transport mode. AH’s job is to protect the entire packet, however, IPSec in transport mode does not create a new IP header in front of the packet but places a copy of the original with some minor changes to the protocol ID therefore not providing essential protection to the details contained in the IP header (Source IP, destination IP etc). AH is identified in the New IP header with an IP protocol ID of 51.
In both ESP and AH cases with IPSec Transport mode, the IP header is exposed.
